    COMING SOON!

The Bicycle Friendly Community program is changing cities all over the country, creating a Bicycle Friendly America, one community at a time. The Bicycle Federation wants to add all of Wisconsin’s communities to the list of 49 cities nationwide that have become designated as Bicycle Friendly Communities. And your support can make it happen!

In past years, we have provided programs that protect cyclists and help Wisconsin’s communities become great places to ride. It is now time to reach to the next level. Our friends at the League of American Bicyclists have developed a program to recognize communities that are striving to be bicycle-friendly. With your involvement, we can make our dreams a reality. We will not only make bicycling better but we will help improve everything about where we live.

Communities that are Bicycle Friendly are seen as places with a high quality of life

When communities win the Bicycle Friendly designation, it can result in increased property values, business growth and increased tourism. Bicycle-friendly communities are places where people feel safe and comfortable riding their bikes for fun, fitness, and transportation. With more people bicycling, communities experience reduced traffic demands, improved air quality and greater physical fitness.

Launching in the summer of 2005, the Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin Bicycle Friendly Community Initiative will:

    · Access current bicycle conditions and make recommendations for improvements
    · Identify local stakeholders and advocates and hook them up with the resources that they need to take bicycling in their community to the next level
    · Introduce citizens and government officials to all kinds of events and programs, like Bike to Work Week and Safe Routes to School, that can improve bicycling in their community
    · Assist local people in getting their communities designated by LAB as a Bicycle Friendly Community!

To get more involved and/or to make your community a Bicycle Friendly Community, contact Marjorie at marjorie@bfw.org or 608-251-4456.
