Statewide Outreach
The Bicycle Federation wants to better serve all of the bicyclists of
Wisconsin. So we’re taking our show on the road! In 2005 BFW staff person
Ali Dwyer will make at least 16 trips statewide to meet with members and
potential members. BFW wants to find out what issues are affecting bicyclists
throughout the state and to offer our help in addressing those issues.
She started off the new year right by trekking to St. Paul to visit with
the Twin Cities Bicycling Club and to Hudson to meet with bike shop owner
Art Doyle and other local bicycle enthusiasts. The meetings created lots
of good energy and a flurry of pro-bike activity.
Do you have a local event that you would like BFW staff to attend? Do
you need help talking to your local transit agency about getting bikes
on buses...or to your local engineers about those bike lanes that you’re
fighting for? Do you just wish that there was a way to get all the bike
folks in your area together to talk about local issues...or to have fun
together?
Ali wants to visit your hometown too! Contact Ali at 608-251-4456 or at
ali@bfw.org and she will see if she
can schedule some meetings and/or gatherings in your area. Even if it
doesn’t work out for Ali to visit your area, she has lots of good information
to help your hometown get to the next level with conditions for bicyclists.

Setting Bicycle-Friendly Goals for Your Community
What can you do to make your community a better place for bicyclists?
Here is a list of things to get you started thinking...how does your community
rate? What improvements could be made? Here are a dozen questions initial
things to ponder:
1. Does your community have a Bicycle Master Plan?
2. Does your community have a written bicycle accomodation or Complete
Streets policy?
3. Are there currently any activities in your community that encourage
or promote bicycling?
4. Is there someone on your communities government staff who is responsible
for dealing with bicycle-related issues?
5. Does your community have a Bicycle Advisory Committee, Ped/Bike Commission,
or other venue for citizen input?
6. Is there a local ordinance requiring bicycle parking?
7. Are there bike racks on your community's buses or are bikes permitted
on public transit?
8. Are there bike or multi-use paths in your community? Are there on-street
bike lanes in your community?
9. Are children allowed and encouraged to ride their bikes to school?
10. Are there bicycle education programs in your community?
11. Is there an active bike club in your area?
12. Is there an independent bicycle retailer (s) in your community who
actively works to promote bicycling?
