2004 Wisconsin State
Pedestrian and Bicycle Summit:
October 21-22,UW Stevens Point
Summit Partners: Governor’s Bicycle Council, Wisconsin DOT, Bicycle
Federation of Wisconsin, Wisconsin Walks, University of Wisconsin-Stevens
Point
The 2004 Wisconsin Pedestrian and Bicycle Summit was a success. As
a thick fog lifted outside of the UW-Stevens Point University Centers
building on Thursday, September 21, the participants inside were gearing
up for a full day of panel discussions.
Designed to be heavy on the discussion part, the panel topics ranged
from Community Development and Health Connections to Economic Impacts
of Bicycling and Walking. That morning, over 100 participants talked about
facilities, bike planning, active community creation, and mountain biking.
At lunchtime, the keynote speaker, Mark Fenton, took the stage. The host
of the PBS show “America’s Walking,” motivated us all to continue our
work and take it to the next level. After a full day one, we wrapped up
with a Saris Cycling Group-sponsored reception at the Stevens Point Holiday
Inn.
Friday was a short day, but packed with good discussion and informative
sessions. The discussions covered funding, creating a ped/bike task force,
and multi-jurisdictional trail building, to name a few.
After the formal sessions, many of us broke out to do what we all love
best, exercise and enjoy the outdoors. Some participants joined Stevens
Point bike club members on a bike ride on the Green Circle Trail. Other
participants joined Wisconsin Walks’ Kit Keller for a walk of the campus
and downtown areas.
Thank you to the UW-Stevens Point University Centers staff for great
service and coordination of event details. Thank you to the Governor’s
Bicycle Council, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, Wisconsin
Walks, and to Saris Cycling Group. Also, thank you to the steering committee
for a judicious selection of panel topics.
