Natural Resources Board Rules Against ATVs in NH-AL State Forest

On Wednesday, April 23rd, the Natural Resources Board voted unanimously to accept DNR Secretary Matthew Frank's recommendation to discontinue the development of all ATV trails in the Northern Highland - American Legion State Forest. ATV trails have been the subject of a two-year feasibility study in the 230,000 acre NH-AL Forest. The results of the study concluded that "overall public opposition", environmental factors and the high costs associated with creating the trails were all factors in the recommendation.

The Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin was one of the groups who provided public opposition. Testimony from the April 23 NRB meeting can be read here:

October Deer Hunt Will Take Place

Despite testimony from the Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin and the Wisconsin Off-Road Bicycle Association, the October deer hunt will once again take place in certain areas of Wisconsin. The early hunt is an effort by the Wisconsin DNR to reduce the deer herd and combat chronic wasting disease. Unfortunately, the hunt comes at one of the best times for off-road bicycling, and will take place at many popular off-road biking destinations such as the Kettle Moraine State Forest.

While the BFW certainly recognizes the need to combat CWD, the concession that bicyclists will have to make this fall rings hollow due to the fact that the root cause of the high deer population - the baiting and feeding of deer - once again goes unchallenged by Wisconsin's policy makers.

Brazen Dropouts Club Seeks Volunteers

Madison bicycle club The Brazen Dropouts is seeking two volunteers to help with their annual spring training races at the Research Park off Whitney Way in Madison.

According to club member Greg Beittler,

"We are in need of two (2) Major volunteers before we get the races under way. These positions are Barricades & Corner Guards. These are two major volunteer positions and we will not start the practice crits with out getting a commitment from two persons who will make sure these task are completed every Tuesday.

The barricade volunteer needs to make sure the barricades are delivered to the race by 6:00 and set up by 6:15. This person should ask for help from other cyclist in getting barricades delivered/setup/tear down.

The Corner Guard volunteer will be responsible in getting people to sign up to cover driveways and corners. This person usually gets the volunteers to sign up as they register for the races."

Please contact Greg at gbiettler@gmail.com if you would like to volunteer.

The club has the proper permits from the City of Madison and the USCF to hold the practice races. All other volunteer positions are filled. The races cannot take place until the last two remaining volunteer positions are filled.
