Volunteer Opportunities at the Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin

BFW has plenty of volunteer projects and on-going office duties. Below is an explanation of some of our projects. In addition, there are always office duties like small mailings, data entry, etc. Remember it takes a whole lot of volunteers to keep an organization going.

If you are interested in any of these volunteer projects, please email the BFW at info@bfw.org.

  1. Editors for the Wisconsin Bicyclist
The Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin produces a quarterly newspaper called the Wisconsin Bicyclist (WB). The WB contains bike news from the WisDOT, local reports from around the state, and features on bike fit, health, bike to work, bike planning, land use, trails, just about everything bike. This volunteer project can be done at home if you have a computer and you are on-line. Tim Wong is the Executive Editor for the WB and he can simply e-mails you an article with editing instructions. No experience needed. Send BFW an e-mail if you are interested.
  2. Mailing Parties
BFW has big mailing parties to mail out the Wisconsin Bicyclist and other materials. It is a work party with pizza and beverages. Of course, these mailing parties are not on-going, so you would need to e-mail me and let me know that you are interested. I will contact you when BFW has the next mailing party. The mailing parties are a great way to see all of the crazy bicyclists in Madison and Milwaukee! Send BFW an e-mail if you are interested.
  3. Advertising Sales
Ok, so the idea of selling ads on the phone doesn't sound all that appealing, but wait! The Wisconsin Bicyclist is a respected newspaper and we have a number of advertisers that put an ad in the Wisconsin Bicyclist every issue. As a volunteer, you would mainly be calling these long-time advertisers to see if they want to continue advertising and if they do, do they want to put a new ad in. It is an easy project, but would have to be done in the office. The Executive Director would be there to help. Send BFW an e-mail if you are interested.
  4. Bicycle Booths
BFW is looking for a volunteer to coordinate this project. Tasks include, contacting tours to make sure BFW can have a booth, coordinating a mailing to the BFW membership list asking for them to volunteer, signing-up members to volunteer, and sending BFW and bicycle information to the member when the tour comes. The BFW office has a lot of information to be set to bike events. This project is a great one for people looking for experience with grassroots organizing. Our bike booths provide information on bicycling but also on transportation policies and land use. Send BFW an e-mail if you are interested.
  5. Meeting with Legislators
BFW is looking for members and volunteers to come and meet with their legislators. It is very important to have bicyclists meet with local and state politicians because these politicians need to know the importance of bicycling as a form of recreation and transportation. If this sounds interesting to you, please contact the BFW office, we would be willing to provide you with some good bicycling information. Send BFW an e-mail if you are interested.
  6. BFW Scrapbooks
BFW has a big stack of newspaper clippings regarding bicycling and we are looking for a volunteer who can work at home in front of the TV (or anywhere else), to clip articles and paste them into the scrapbooks. These scrapbooks will be used at events to show bicyclists the activities of the BFW and general bicycle information. Send BFW an e-mail if you are interested.
  7. Webpage
BFW needs web gurus! If you have technical or design expertise and experience with web site development and maintenance, contact us.
  8. Database
BFW needs someone with extensive experience in Access Database Development to provide ongoing technical support. Your help would only be needed occasionally.
  9. Membership Mailings
BFW needs a few people to come in to the office for a few hours at the beginning of each month to help get out membership mailings. Easy work… and sorta fun!
  10. Milwaukee Office
The Milwaukee office needs general member and volunteer support for everything from attending public meetings to hanging posters to organizing Bike to Work Week events. Be part of the fledgling bike culture movement in Milwaukee...drop Jack (Jack@bfw.org) an email to find out how.
