State Journal Floyd Landis has come a long way since his first ride
on a Huffy. All the way, in fact, to being part of the team that helped
pave the way earlier this year for Lance Armstrong's record sixth Tour
de France victory. Landis, a former member of the U.S. Postal Team and
now part of the Phonak cycling team, answered questions for a crowd of
more than 300 people Monday night at Saris Cycling Group in Fitchburg.
The event was the 2004 Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin fall fund- raiser,
where organizers hoped to raise $10,000 to hire a lobbyist to represent
bicycling issues. The crowd peppered Landis, 29, with serious, detailed
and sometimes obscure questions about his experiences in his three Tour
de France races. And Landis responded honestly: Asked about his favorite
climb, he said "The only real good part of the Tour is when its over."
Landis said he bikes an average of 20,000 miles a year and about 2,000
a month during peak season. When asked how much he drives, Landis said:
"If you ride 20,000 miles a year, you don't have much time to drive."
A love of bike-time and lack of drive-time is something Landis has in
common with a lot of Madisonians - including Mayor Dave Cieslewicz, who
spoke at the event. "I have the only city vehicle with a bike rack on
it," Cieslewicz said. And Landis fit right in with the Madison crowd -
except when he asked for a Mad Cow beer instead of a New Glarus "Spotted
Cow." As for what Landis consumes while competing, the answer was "just
about anything." "You just eat whatever is around," he said. "It's difficult
to be so obsessed with what you're eating. You just eat whatever it is
and then you go to sleep." Nikolas Lemke and his dad Chris Lemke, both
of Baraboo made the trip to Madison just to see Landis. "Floyd is an American
racer," his dad Chris Lemke said. "There are not a lot of them." Nikolas
Lemke, who at age 9 has been part of a junior bike racing team for about
two years, was excited to get a couple postcards signed by Landis after
the event.
SARIS CYCLING GROUP RAISES OVER $20,000 FOR BICYCLE FEDERATION OF WSCONSIN
Madison, WI - Saris Cycling Group raised over $20,000 at a fundraiser
held Monday, Nov 15 at its plant in Madison, WI. Over 300 people attended
the event, with proceeds benefiting the Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin.
Attendees were able to take self-guided tours of the Saris Cycling Group
facility while browsing a silent auction with items donated from cycling
industry friends as well as several local companies. Pacific Cycles provided
plenty of food and drink. A live band entertained the crowd before a special
appearance by professional cyclist Floyd Landis. Landis answered a multitude
of questions in a Q&A session, and capped the evening by drawing the raffle
Grand Prize winner who took home a Trek Travel trip for two. "Our goal
was to raise $10,000 for the Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin to help them
lobby for the voice of the cyclist in Wisconsin," said Saris Cycling Group
President Chris Fortune adding, "It truly speaks to the support of cycling
in Wisconsin that we were able to double our expectations." Saris Cycling
Group is the parent company of the Saris and CycleOps brands. Based in
Madison WI, since 1974 its products are available in over 30 countries
globally. -30- For more details contact Robb Zbierski at Saris Cycling
