Morning Fred, is this a bill you are suggesting, or is it something that actually has been proposed and I am just unaware of it.
Personally

, I emphasize that to say it is not the official Bike Fed opinion, I agree with an additional fee paid by cyclists to start the funding discussion on the right foot. I think once we establish that we pay for what we get, we could then move on to demand that we stop paying for what we don't use and in the end we would have a sustainable dedicated funding stream and bicycling would look a lot more attractive to a lot more people. Unless you know something I don't about this excise tax bill, I think you and I are in the minority among our fellow cyclists.

Support the Kohl-Petri Bill for bicycling. It is an 11% excise tax on all bicycle products is now needed to push for while the federal transportation bill is debated. Why 11%? Because that is what the other federal acts are, and the other groups can't come after us by saying that we are not paying our own way. Of course no transport mode pays for itself, but with this bill passed, we will have a new pedestrian and bicycle friendly transportation bill for the next 6 years.

The Bike Fed always invites all political leaders to the bike-partisan Bike Summit, no matter what party they belong to. But to be factual, all Democrats have not always supported bicycling. When I first began going to the national bike summit in 2001,(the third year) and the state bike summit (this is the 4th at the Capitol), most democrats didn't have any clue that bicycling even was an issue. It was a result of direct advocacy by those who attended the summits that raised the profile of bicycling. To this day there remain quite a few democrats who do not support cycling in any meaningful way. Some have told me personally that bicycling is not an issue for their constituents. And to fair to Rep. Tom Petri (R-WI), he has supported cycling longer than I have been an advocate. He and former Rep. Jim Oberstar (D-MN) and current Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) have been institutionalized bicycle advocates in Washington for a very long time. We are honoring Congressman Petri at this summit, not only for his long support of cycling, but for his recent support of cycling in the face of extreme pressure from his party leadership.

Casey,

The full coverage Velo Orange fenders and the big waffle Bibia Classic mud flap keep most of the spray off my estate sale purchased ($4!) vintage Allen Edmunds. I do wear Tingley "Executives" tall rubber overshoes on messier days. I also wear really tall (mid thigh) Bed Stu black cap toe combat boots, that look like dress shoes with my pants down. I have treated them with Sno Seal waterproofing (awesome beeswax based stuff) that protects them. On days like yesterday, I wear a thrifted London Fog trenchcoat, which keeps my legs dry to the knees. Then I roll up my pants to the top of my boots and don't worry about any spray that hits the waterproof Bed Stu's. I have not yet tried my new REALLY tall wrestling boots to commute in. Those red, knee high boots are made of PVC, so fully waterproof, but completely unbreathable ;) I am also afraid they might crack in the 12 degree temps I pedaled home in yesterday. But they do make a heck of a fashion statement around the water cooler!
