Free Bikes 4 Kidz is Coming to Madison, Needs Your Help!

Thanks for this guest blog post by Andy Quandt, The BikeMobile, LLC

The first time I saw Free Bikes 4 Kidz in action I got chills. In just a few short years, this sweetly simple concept—matching a few hundred donated, refurbished used bikes with underserved kids—has become a powerful, Guinness Book of World Record-having, community-wide celebration at the largest mall in the world. Now I’m privileged to bring FB4K to Madison and I’m hoping you’ll embrace it at the same level Minneapolis has, but with our own, uniquely Madisonian spin.

The Free Bikes for Kids warehouse

We believe Madison is uniquely positioned, as a collaborative Platinum biking city with a progressive mandate toward equity, to really take this thing to the next level. Whether you can donate your time, your bikes, your dollars or your help in spreading the word, we’re relying on you to help us get everybody on a bike. What could be better than that?

Volunteers will be needed to help with helmet fitting and other things.

We—(me and a small group of bike equity enthusiasts in Madison, including Bike Fed board member Peter Gray)—want to make the same thing happen here. In December 2016, we incorporated FB4K-Madison as a Wisconsin 501c3 and our initial goal is to collect, refurbish and give away 1000 bikes in the next 3 months. We’re hitting the ground running with a bike drive this coming January 14th, 2017, from 9am-1pm. SSM Health Dean Medical Group has stepped up with seed money, a free helmet for every kid, and use of their 7-area locations as drop off points. I and a handful of other professional bike mechanics will pick them up and take them to a warehouse unit donated by Seybold Storage and a temporary workspace donated by Alexander Real Estate, where we will clean and fix them up. Boys & Girls Club and Madison Metropolitan School District are already working to identify the kids we’ll match with bikes on our big giveaway day, this March 18, 2017. The Madison community is already rallying behind this cause, but we need more.

Here’s where you come in: we need all the help and community buy-in we can get.

Every penny counts, so if you’re able online donations can be made here: http://fb4kmadison.org/donate/. Please also visit our website and like the Facebook page to stay up to date on news and developments.

  1. This is great.

Have you guys thought at all about partnering with the current bike giveaway program in Madison, Wheels for Winners? They may be able to help or provide support or volunteers, or advice on matching kids and bikes.

  2. How about combining basic safe riding training with each bike; at least offer it. Simple to do really basics like learning to use the brakes, look back and turn signals. Trying could be graduated based on age and/or skill.
