Action Cycle! Join us on final ride of the season

This post is submitted by Safe Routes to School Instructor Angela Livermore.

Last Action Cycle ride of the season: Saturday October 29th, 11am leaving from Dreambikes (2021 N Doctor M.L.K. Dr, Milwaukee, WI 53212). New riders are always welcome!

Action Cycle is riding strong through fall! This past Saturday, October 22nd, we completed our fourth group ride—leaving one ride remaining. The morning started out a bit cold but three brave young girls showed up with layers and smiles. We left Dreambikes out to go north on 2nd Street, turned right onto Wright Street, and then rode northwest on parts of the Beerline Trail ending at our destination, Kern Park. The park was beautiful with autumn colors and sun peeking through the clouds. We did some writing in between climbing on a giant spider web:

“I had fun riding to the park and climbing and spinning. I like the people that I ride with because they know how to have fun.”

“I had fun at the park and in the spider web!  I also enjoyed the small group it made shouting “Left, Right and Stopping!” a lot easier. I liked pushing myself on the up-hill and relaxing on the down. I feel safe riding with my team.”
On our return we took the bike lanes on Humboldt Blvd. to Gordon Park. We rode onto the Beerline Trail from the park going south exiting the trail onto Wright Street. From there we went west crossing Holton Street, then turning left onto 2nd Street leading us back to Dreambikes. This was my favorite ride from the first season of Action Cycle. The challenging brisk air combined with the seasonal colors and smells was fantastic. I know that our final ride will be a good one so come on out and ride!

Action Cycle is a bicycle centered, community focused movement for female youth who live in the Milwaukee area, focusing on zip codes 53206 and 53212. Members take bi-weekly group rides, exploring their city in a new and intimate manner. Following a group ride, all members make a journal entry concerning the experiences that were exciting and/or made them feel unsafe. These experiences will illustrate to all whom participate they may be leaders and be heard. The program aspires to encourage youth to find bicycle routes to school or the library safely and independently. Action Cycle is a platform to use the power of the bicycle for youth to organize neighborhood improvement. Ultimately this program is a conduit for change where needed while empowering young female youth along the ride.
