Potential Trail Needs Support!

Thanks for this guest post by John Siegert, Route of the Badger Project Manager for Rails to Trails. John lives in Racine, is a member of the Bike Fed Board of Directors and works out of our Milwaukee office two days a week. You can contact John via email or at 414-255-0399. We really need to purchase this abandoned right of way form the railroad or we will loose this singular opportunity to fill a key gap in our state trail network! Please read below and contact the elected officials as suggested.

With the rails removed, it is easy to see the potential for this corridor to be a great bicycle trail. Let’s not miss this opportunity to build out this important missing link in our trail network.

Wisconsin has long been known for its great riding.  We’re also well-known for having been pioneers in the rail-trail movement, with the Elroy-Sparta State Trail setting an example for the rest of the country in the 1960s.

Today we have an extremely important opportunity to extend this legacy and fill a key gap in our state trail network in Racine County.  A local advocacy group, Union Grove Rails to Trails, is calling for support.  The “Waxdale Spur” is an approximately 13-mile stretch of abandoned rail corridor which could become an extension of the White River State Trail and go a long way toward connecting Burlington and Racine.  This segment of potential trail is also a key piece of the “Route of the Badger” vision that the national Rails-to-Trails Conservancy  has articulated for Southeastern Wisconsin.  The Wisconsin Bike Fed has joined RTC as a partner in supporting this effort

You can see by the map that the Waxdale Spur fills an essential gap in our state trail network! Please contact the elected officials and recommend they support the acquisition of this property.

Larissa Gallagher and the good folks at Union Grove Rails to Trails have directed us their Facebook page for the following appeal:

We need your help! Please show your support of the trail development by contacting State Senator Van Wanggaard and State Representative Robin Vos. Our local municipalities and County are in support of the corridor acquisition and development, but our State officials need to know how much we want it, too! Please contact them AS SOON AS POSSIBLE to show your support for the purchase and conversion. Remember to put your full name, complete address, and phone number in any mail/e-mail you send so that they know you are in their district.
