Community Repair Bike Program

I’m not a great mechanic. My work doing ped/bike education and outreach with the Bike Fed doesn’t demand this of me, but I love connecting passionate people with a great experience. Last Monday I had one of those experiences at the Darbo Worthington Community Bike Repair event.

Zounds of kids came out to Worthington Park on a beautiful third Monday of the month. Food was shared, and kids were empowered to diagnose what attention their bikes would get. We all took the Share and Be Aware pledge and the kids extended it to their parents and neighbors.

This is another example of why I enjoy being part of the Bike Fed community. Friends from local bike shops (thanks Revolution Cycles, Budget and Trek) came and pieced some donated parts (thanks Planet Bike and others) together and witnessed a wealth of opportunity through a better working bike.

Let me know via email at central@wisconsinbikefed.org if you’d like to be a part of these events. We’d love to expand the program to other communities with the same need for volunteer mechanics and donated parts.

The repair sessions are held the third Monday of every month until September 15th. More info is available at http://worthingtonpark.org/events/bike-repair/2014-repair-events/
