This is a quick update to let you know about some of the things the staff at the Bike Fed and our members have been doing over the last month to make Wisconsin an even better place to ride a bike. Apologies to the daily followers of this blog as, but most of the Bike Fed’s members are not regular readers, so this information is new to them.

Next year’s 2012 Wisconsin Bike Summit is being held on Tuesday, February 21 at the Inn at the Park, Best Western (right on the capital square). There will likely be a happy hour the evening before (similar to last year). Our goal is to open online registration on January 3.
2012 Wisconsin state trail passes are here! Get yours at the Bike Fed’s online store. These DNR passes are required for biking, in-line skating, horseback riding, and cross-country skiing on certain Wisconsin state trails, listed on the DNR’s website. They make a perfect gift for people who love to bike, cross country ski and hike.
Only four days left until the Midwest Regional Championship Cyclocross Races this weekend in Badger Prairie Park in the Town of Verona. For those not in the know, cyclocross is one of the best spectator sports of all cycling events. So grab your cow bell and check it out. The weather this weekend is supposed to be pretty nice.
I am back from hunting in Peeksville, where I used my Schlick Cycles Northpaw to ride out to my deer stand. We had snow ‘Up North’ so this was my first test of the fatbike in the snow. While we only had a few inches, so far the verdict on the Northpaw’s ride can be summed up in one word: SWEET!
This week there were three very different videos published of bicycle commuting south of the Cheddar Curtain. Taken as a group, I think they provide tremendous insight into the state of bicycle infrastructure in the United States and help to answer why less than one percent of people bike to work even though nearly half of the US population ride bicycles for recreation. They also illustrate what sort of political leadership is needed to get more universally attractive and convenient bikeways constructed.
I used to hate winter. Thinking about it during late summer or early fall would make my chest tighten up with anxiety. The cold, the snow, the darkness, the joyless three-hour rides on the trainer – I absolutely hated it. Especially after the football season ended.
Sunday provided more evidence that the FatBike phenomenon is real and growing as 28 racers braved the cold and showed up for the Mustache Beach Race. This is race #1 in the Wisconsin FatBike race series. This race was for FatBikes only, which means tires 3.7 inches wide or wider.
Today’s HP (Happy Place) visit was a good one. Temps were pushing 21 degrees so the beach was hard as a rock and smooth as a highway. I wished today was our Saturday Breakfast Ride as the temps are predicted to slowly rise throughout the day and nite. Tonight’s low of only 30 might just be too warm for ideal beach riding conditions on Saturday morning.
But today was perfect.
Madison’s B-cycle bike sharing system will be closing for the season on December 15th. B-cycle is closing the 2011 year with an impressive number of trips, users and stations.
Road users tend to violate the laws they can get away with breaking if doing so gets them where they are going faster. Many motorists speed, most pedestrians won’t wait for the walk signal if no cars are coming, and bicyclists sometimes ride on sidewalks if they don’t have a safe or convenient place to ride in the street.

Friends and regular readers know I am a big booster for Wisconsin and a proud life-long resident of Milwaukee. I am usually the first one to say what a great place this is to live and ride a bicycle. The Bicycle Federation has even been criticized for being an institutionalized booster for anything cycling related in Wisconsin. That said, in recent years, I feel we are falling behind other places that have moved quickly to adopt things like protected bike lanes that have been proven to get a lot more butts on bikes. Why is it that in the state that built the nation’s first rail trail, cities have been so slow to add these innovative bicycle facilities?
“Whether it is led by someone in this room or not, it is going to happen.” “It” is a mountain biking league for Wisconsin high school-aged racers. The speaker is Matt Fritzinger, the founder of the National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA). He and NICA Associate Director Tyler Dibble led a presentation in Madison with the aim of forming new high school mountain bike clubs. After about 90 minutes I was pretty convinced that their goal is more inevitable than the obstacles are insurmountable.
