BIKE CAMPS
In 2006, the BFW piloted a new extension of SRTS, Bike Camp. Bike Camp is a 2 week summer program that combines the Bike Drivers Ed curriculum with additional bicycle riding. Whereas the normal SRTS bike education program is 10 hours, Bike Camps are generally 24-30 hours. Bike Camp is taught in 2.5 to 3 hour long daily sessions over the course of two weeks. With the additional 20 hours of bicycle riding and practice to neighborhood and citywide destinations, Bike Campers become excellent and safe bike riders.
The daily bicycle field trips give kids a chance to master the skills and learn about their communities. Bike Camps can have a theme for the field trips such as urban agriculture (with bike rides to community gardens and farmers markets) or environmental exploration (with rides to nature centers and preserves). In 2007, the Milwaukee Public Schools funded 6 Bike Camps. In 2008, the program will expand across the state with support from REI. If you would like your community to host one of two REI sponsored Bike Camps, use 750 words or less to explain why your community should have a bike camp and e-mail it to Jessica Wineberg, Education Manager.
